Philippians 1:15-18 Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill: 16 The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains; 17 but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.
PAUL really loved Jesus and loved others, didn’t he? Everything about his life focuses on making Jesus known, so people will be saved to eternal life. Surprisingly, he is even glad for “competing Christians” who oppose Paul and teach false doctrine. At the very least, they are introducing people to Jesus. Yes, there were men in Rome preaching the gospel for very wrong reasons. As the Pharisees’ pride Jesus so forcefully condemned, those of selfish ambition preached to make a reputation for themselves. They taught of Jesus while speaking against Jesus’ servant Paul. Paul’s imprisonment was an opportunity to elevate themselves above Paul. Paul, though, saw the gospel’s good in their self-purpose. Jesus’ name was proclaimed! Praise God. This is joy. Even as he was opposed while in prison, Paul saw the positive. He knew the Father was positively in control. The good news would advance as the King directed. This was not about Paul’s glory but only to raise up Jesus to all. What’s true for you? Do you find it hard to accept the negative circumstances? Do you have people around you who are unpleasant and compete against you? Then stop and think: “How can I speak and live Jesus’ love?” Jesus calls us to forgive, love and pray for all, even those who oppose us. What changes will come to your life as you live into Jesus’ true words? Paul’s life was grounded in his love for God. When you love your Lord as the apostle did, the hard news of your life becomes a way for the good news into others’ hearts. Be faithful to your Lord. See your life in Jesus’ love. Mirror his love to all. Joy Link: Really love Jesus. It changes those around you, too. Comments are closed.
